After the Storms
Following the 1900 Hurricane, Galveston built the world’s largest Seawall and raised the island’s grade. Thousands of live oaks were planted to prevent erosion.
Hurricane Ike in 2008 flooded the island and many trees were lost. Emotionally attached homeowners refused to simply cut them down—carvings brought new life and meaning.
